Chewing: There are some behaviors that may seem inbred into a Shih Tzu and many other breeds of dogs; however with some patience and a bit of training many of these somewhat disturbing dog issues can be resolved.
Chewing may top the list of all dog owners! This can be separated into 2 types: puppy teething and adult dog destructive chewing. Luckily, easy dog training techniques can solve both types of issues.
Shih Tzu puppies will have their puppy teeth begin to grow in at the age of 3 to 6 weeks. This will bring an almost unstoppable urge to gnaw on everything that they can reach. For this reason, an owner must remove as many objects as they can from ground level. Electrical cords are the #1 cause of injury to teething pups.
Puppy's who are causing destruction in the home can be trained to only bite down on their dog toys. An owner should supply the puppy with many dog toys that are specifically designed to ease their pain. What type of dog toys are best? Dog toys that have 2 features:
They have various shapes that will reach the dog's gums while they are chewing on them
They can be put into the freezer to make them cold
Adult dog chewing is usually brought on by either boredom or nervousness caused by being left home alone. This can be remedied by having a large supply of dog toys that are interactive and interesting. Toys that hold treats are especially effective in keeping pets busy and they will spend hours working for the yummy snacks held within the dog toy.
One of the best training techniques is to teach your Shih Tzu to have a toy when you arrive home. You can do this by entering the home and without patting your dog or giving hugs, ask your pet to grab a toy.
Only after they do so, should you offer all your love, kisses and hugs to your pet. Soon your Shih Tzu will realize that they gain your attention by having a toy. Not knowing when you will arrive, they will be more prone to stay busy with their pet toys while awaiting your arrival.
When you Shih Tzu does have a toy or
brings one to you, always reward them with great praise. Your dog does
want to please you, they just must be shown how to.
