Clothing for Shih Tzu Dogs

Overview

Clothing for Shih Tzu puppies and dogs go much further than just a way to make a Tzu look adorable. A few key pieces serve several important functions. Here, we'll take a look at why having some clothes for your Shih Tzu may be a good idea, see a few beautiful models, and then show some of our favorite recommendations.

Valid Reasons for Putting Clothes on a Shih Tzu

There are some breeds that can do rather well year-round without any clothing since they have a thick coat of fur and are larger dogs with thicker layers of both muscle and fat; this is not so for the Shih Tzu breed.

In essence, both this breed's low level of fat and coat of hair gives him very little natural insulation.

Being small and having hair, it is not uncommon for a Shih Tzu to have a low tolerance for cold or rainy weather. Certainly an inside dog, many Shih Tzu need an extra layer to feel comfortable when outside in temps 32 degree Fahrenheit or lower. Or even in temps hovering in the 40's if outside for over 30 minutes.

Being in need of a little extra help can manifest in several ways.

When a Shih Tzu is not tolerating the weather, this can:
  • Affect housebreaking - Dogs do best when they feel relaxed, unrushed and comfortable. Not to mention that when an owner feels/sees that their pup is shivering outside, they are more likely to sprint back inside before proper training techniques can be followed (led to a designated area, time to find the perfect spot, reward and praise when the deed is done).
  • Prevent exercise requirements from being met. This breed should have two brisk walks per day, for at least 20 minutes per session. This is what is optimal for both physical and emotional health.
If a Shih Tzu is reluctant to be outside or owners feel that the weather is just too harsh to bring their dog out, this can add up to far too many days with inadequate exercise. Though there are some indoor games you can play, this never can equate purposeful walking for a timed duration.
  • Overall comfort - Feeling chilled for long periods of time is quite wearing both on the body and the mind. Inside or out on cool days, while a Shih Tzu may not be so cold that there's any threat of hypothermia, if he is feeling uncomfortable day after day, this can cause a strain.
There's no need to have a dog feel less than ideal, if his needs can be met easily by slipping on a shirt or sweater.

Recommended Clothing for Shih Tzu

Shirts & Sweaters

These are always a wonderful choice when it's just a bit chilly.  Quality cotton shirts and sweaters are soft and the material gives, for a great fit. This sort of clothing is best for late autumn, early spring and any time that a Shih Tzu could do with a soft, comfortable layer.

Sweaters are also a great option if your Shih Tzu was shaved too close and is feeling uncomfortable with his very short coat.

Vests & Coats

Lined or insulted vests or coats are perfect for cold winter days. The main element that is needed to keep a dog warm is that his core body is protected, so these will add warmth right where it's needed: From the withers to the rump, while allowing free range of motion. A dog can feel super warm, comfortable and move unimpeded.

Tip: If you are only going to have one piece of clothing for your Shih Tzu, opt for a waterproof vest or jacket; this way, if there is wet snow coming down, your puppy or dog will be dressed appropriately.

If, however, you are planning on having a couple of pieces, we'd recommend one soft vest and one waterproof coat, so that you can choose which one fits the weather as switching back and forth cuts down on wear.

Cute Bonus Clothing

Bonus clothing are extra pieces that, while they do not serve as a Shih Tzu's coat or weatherproof vest, are nice to have if you enjoy dressing your puppy or dog up for the cuteness factor. Some dogs simply loves to wear clothes, and if your Shih Tzu is one of them, these are some adorable options we couldn't leave out.
